Do You Need the 3rd or 4th Edition of the ASPEN Core Curriculum for the CNSC Exam?
One of the most common questions I get from students preparing for the CNSC exam is, “Which version of the ASPEN Core do I need for the CNSC exam?” Here’s everything you need to know to make the right decision.
The 2026 CNSC exams will use the 4th edition of the ASPEN Adult Nutrition Support Core Curriculum as a reference.
The 4th edition of the Core Curriculum was published to coincide with ASPEN’s 50th anniversary. It includes major updates to align with the latest ASPEN and ESPEN guidelines, making it an excellent long-term reference.

Do I need the ASPEN Core for the CNSC Exam?
Yes, absolutely. Don’t try to pass this exam without the reference book for the exam. The ASPEN Adult Nutrition Support Core Curriculum is the book for this exam. You need access to a copy. You don’t have to own a copy, per se, if you’re able to share an office copy that is sufficient.
Please note: ASPEN doesn’t allow shared logins, so you can’t share digital copies.
So, what has changed?

The ASPEN Core and ASPEN practice papers are final authority for the exam, but the ASPEN Core is NOT representative of the CNSC Exam.
What does this mean? There is a ton of carbohydrate content in the ASPEN Core, and not a ton of carbohydrate content on the exam. There is a very tiny chapter on ethics in the very end of the 3rd edition ASPEN Core, yet you will see several ethics questions on the CNSC Exam. If you study based on the ASPEN Core alone, you’ll likely spend too much time on the stuff that doesn’t matter, and not enough time on the stuff that does.
So, don’t settle for a study guide that provides a “Cliff Notes” version or high level overview of the ASPEN Core, or you’ll leave gaps in your studying. Do I Need the Pediatric Core Curriculum for the CNSC Exam?
I don’t recommend purchasing the ASPEN Pediatric Nutrition Support Core Curriculum, unless you already have easy access to it. It contains excellent information, but it’s much more in-depth than what’s needed for the CNSC exam and could easily become overwhelming.
Instead, I suggest:
Using a targeted study guide
Leveraging flashcard sets focused on pediatric exam content
Reviewing condensed notes that focus only on high-yield pediatric material
